Triads are a bit of a "holy grail" among pencil collectors, because of their extreme high quality and their rarity.  The name was derived from the triangular shape of the barrel.  Another interesting feature that appeared on the pens was a unique knob on the top of the cap, which was turned to release the cap (rather than twisting the whole cap).  Early Triads had a similar cap.

This example is a little later.
